William B Hooks Annual Scholarship

Born in Whiteville, North Carolina in 1921, Bill attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill for both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He has been a social studies teacher, a dance instructor, and a choreographer of dance. He was the Director of the Bank Street College Publications Group and educational consultant to CBS for the Captain Kangaroo show. He wrote more than 50 children’s books. His best known book, , Pioneer Cat (Random, 1988), was named an American Library Association Notable.

In 2009, SCBWI Carolinas initiated the William H. Hooks Memorial to honor this prolific children’s author who was  a founding member of the SCBWI Carolinas Chapter and gave willingly of his time, energy and experience to all who were interested in writing for children.

This is an open drawing to all who attend the SCBWI C Annual Fall Conference. The drawing takes place on Sunday after the closing keynote.
