Online Workshop
SCBWI - Carolinas, Webinar

Workshop Description

What do you need to consider before even writing the first word? Pre-planning a novel is a powerful process to help you understand the deeper meaning behind the story only you can tell. Devoting a little time up front to organizing your thoughts can lead to a big payoff in terms of more focused first drafts and shorter revising times.

Come to this workshop if you’d like to discuss ways to give your creativity free rein, explore the impact you want your novel to have, and gain an understanding of the key elements you’ll need to begin a solid first draft. Author Megan Shepherd will also walk you through her step-by-step pre-planning process on her latest novel. Q&A included. MG and YA writers (not best suited for picture book writers).

New York Times bestseller and Carnegie Medal nominated author Megan Shepherd grew up in her family’s independent bookstore in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

She is the author of many acclaimed middle grade and young adult novels including The Madman’s Daughter series, The Cage series, The Secret Horses of Briar Hill, and the Grim Lovelies series.

She now lives and writes on a 125-year-old farm outside Asheville, North Carolina, with her husband and children, two cats, chickens, bees, and an especially scruffy dog.
