Workshop Description

Writing a novel can be daunting. Especially if it’s your first one. Or, if you’ve started numerous times and never seem to get past chapter five.

If you’re a picture book writer, desiring to shift your normal word count from 500 to 50K is huge. Until you start looking at it from a different lens.

I started and stopped writing novels every November during NANOWRIMO for years. Finally, this past November (2019) I finished my first middle grade!

It’s also one of the contributing factors to how I landed my agent a few months later. Although I followed the NANOWRIMO premise, I tweaked it to ensure my success—something I hadn’t done during previous attempts.

I’d like to share some of those tips and tricks to help you get over the hurdles and on your way to a completed novel in 30 days.

Dorothy H. Price has been an SCBWI Carolinas member since 2010. Her first picture book, Nana’s Favorite Things, was published in 2016.

In 2019, two of her stories were published in Teaching Tolerance’s Teaching Hard History series. That same year, Dorothy was selected for the We Need Diverse Books Mentorship Program.

In April 2020, Dorothy was one of two winners in the first #SCBWIFlashFic Twitter contest. She is represented by Miranda Paul of the Erin Murphy Literary Association.
